The Montessori Philosophy

Dr. Maria Montessori (1870-1952) was the first female to graduate from the University of Rome Medical School. Her educational method is based on the following principles:

· Each child possesses the power of the “Absorbent Mind”. It gives the child the ability to absorb unlimited amount of information from the environment without effort. By the age of six this gift has disappeared so the first six years of life are critical.

· During early childhood the child has limited periods of time which shows strong attraction toward a particular aspect in the environment. During these “Sensitive Periods” (language, movement, order, sensory experiences and social development) a child can acquire knowledge or skill more perfectly than any other time.

· In order to encourage the child to explore and experiment, the materials and activities should be presented in a “Prepared Environment”. That is a safe and eye-catching environment that must contain the mental stimulation necessary for the development of the child.
